Dance of Life
After a day filled with a few too many different aspects of life, I just wanted to find a beautiful spot, put in my ear buds, have a little bourbon and dance it out. This fit the bill.
Earlier in the day, I passed hundreds, literally hundreds of unimaginative homes. A lot of modular homes with white blinds, undoubtedly dusty. I felt that with just a little imagination, a splash of color, their lives could have been more beautiful. But some places are just dismal and the population doesn’t have the resources to pull itself out. Like this town.
Obviously these ones just down the block have passed their prime. There is no sign that this place is going to be improving its lot.
North Carolina has a number of national wildlife refuges. They’ve done a good job of building trails, but the budget is not so generous as to be able to maintain many of the dangerously rotting boardwalks passing through the swampier parts. They are romantic, but unsafe. Between the Alligator River Refuge and the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is this sign, which thrilled me as I’d never seen one and had no idea of the success of the repopulation of red wolves here.
The Roanoke River NWF was closed and looked like no one had been there for awhile.
Look closely to see the river behind their amphitheater where the rangers evidently gave programs.
The last old amphitheater I visited was the ruin of an old Roman one used for gladiator fights. Thankfully that past time isn’t a thing around here these days.
After a long day of hiking, this simple and straightforward sign was a welcome sight.
